Wedding Wednesday - Wearing Different Bridesmaid Dresses

I never thought selecting bridesmaid dresses would be the biggest decision I have had to make for our wedding. The reception venue, ceremony location and my wedding dress(es) were beyond easy to decide upon. Yet the dresses that the girls closest to me is a giant unknown.

I have four dear friends who will be standing with me on my big day. All four girls are beautiful and fit but shaped differently. While one would be stunning in a form fitting strapless gown, the other needs straps or we would be having a totally different kind of after party. Just saying....

So I made the decision to allow my girls to select their own dress. One that would accentuate their individuality and look best on their figure. Plus I cannot get accused of picking out ugly bridesmaid dresses.

At this time, I am certain of two things - the dresses will need to be the same shade (charcoal grey) and will not be an infinity dress. Since the wedding is in New Orleans, I am encouraging the girls not to have a long dress since it will get nasty during the second line parade.

What do you think about bridesmaids wearing different style dresses? I have always been a matchy-matchy girl so this is a big deal for me. After being in around 10 weddings, I know this will take a lot of stress off of my shoulders knowing each girl will be happy with their dress.

  1. I personally just love all of these gray dresses (especially the one shoulder), but I agree that either find a dress that would fit all body styles, or have them select their own dresses. I just had my 2 girls so it was easier (even those their two body styles are different too), but for every additional person you add, that's more to consider. Its going to be so pretty! I love charcoal grey. I also wouldn't want to be responsible for picking a dress that they really won't wear again. This way, they can pick one that will last and be used for going out again.

    1. The one shoulder is one of the first ones I had them try on. It's also the one that I couldn't have everyone in.....my dress is one shoulder and it looked geometrically awful. I do hope one of them go that route though.

I've probably spent close to $2000 or more on bridesmaid dresses that I would never wear again. Only one was something that I would have wanted to wear again but it wasn't the right color and dying it would have cost too much.

  2. I'm old. Let's get that out of the way before I make a comment. I think in a different time than you do. So, I'm pretty sure you aren't going to like my comments, but you did ask.
Different styles look disjointed. To me it takes away from the beauty of the wedding, and just looks like any old party. Charcoal grey - not so much. I don't know many people - young or old - who can truly wear charcoal grey. To me, it looks more like something you would wear to a funeral.
    Sorry, but you asked.
On a positive note, I do like the shorter dress, especially since you plan to walk down the streets of NO after the ceremony.

    1. Jo Joan! I do agree a bit with the disjointed part comment. That's why I had such a hard time with making this decision. With that said, all along, I do not want my bridesmaids looking like they went into a David's Bridal, spending $200 on a dress they would never wear again. I have been that bridesmaid one too many times (and I always drop the dress off at goodwill right after the wedding). That's the main reason I am allowing them to pick their own dress style, within reason.

I know grey sounds drab but it's actually a very beautiful neutral color that goes with everything. I did have them try on grey dresses before I selected the color and it looked great on all their skin tones. I am certain you will change your mind on post wedding on the color portion :)

Thank you for commenting, I like hearing opinions other than people telling me that it is perfect.

  3. I LOVE these dresses you featured. Funny that I'll be wearing the same shade for my brother and Sloan's wedding :) I definitely like the idea of having bridesmaids wear different styles but with the same color/fabric. Everyone has a different body type and for the overall look of everyone at the "alter" and even more importantly, in pictures, I think it's vital that everyone wears something that flatters them. Love that you'll have them pick their own too...that's the way to do it and they will love you for it!! Good thinking Megan :)

    1. Thank you!! It was a hard decision because I do like everything to match perfectly. But as long as the dresses are the same length, fabric and color, it will still look the same, but with a little personality.

I've always loved the grey!! It's the perfect color for New Orleans.

  5. Megan, don't sweat the matchy matchy aspect. I had my girls pick their own dresses, with the only requirements being eggplant purple and floor length (since my wedding was in October). My ladies looked stunning and even though the dresses were different, they totally complemented each other. Same with my little sister's wedding this past August - we all bought them separately and they looked amazing. Miraculously, we all picked shades of coral that matched almost perfectly. I love the grey you've chosen and I'm sure whatever your girls pick, they'll look fantastic!

  6. I'm clearly way behind in commenting, but I'll do it anyway! I am personally a fan of the "pick the style of dress you like" but in the same fabric and color idea. It might be because that's what I did, but hey...whatever! My 4 bms wore 3 different dresses (2 of them wore the same one) and I don't think it looked disjointed or out of place at all. There were enough elements to bring everything together (same fabric, color, and flowers), and I liked that their personalities were able to come out by their choice of dress, jewelry, and hair. I think it will look great when it's all put together!
